Addictions and Spirituality – Same Goal, Different Paths

Deep down inside of all of us, there is a calling to connect with our divine source and to feel a sense of oneness. Some people utilize inappropriate methods and substances trying to simulate a spiritual awakening, but the efforts lead to greater unhappiness because it never fills them up. The high has to bigger each time, so they take harder drugs, spend money they don’t have, or find another sex partner. Each time the high wears off, the addict is left empty and the cycle is repeated again.

When people follow a spiritual path, they may experience ecstasy while meditating, and most feel peaceful and happy. Others may feel the love pour through them. And some may simply feel a sense of peace and fearlessness as they go about their day, knowing that something greater than themselves is in control.

There are lots of great treatments centers out there, but most addicts return to their former lifestyles. Addiction is more than a physical illness. We need to treat the root cause… spiritual emptiness.

An addict has the potential to be a great spiritual person. If they could redirect their efforts toward a path that isn’t harmful, they would find peace, love and happiness. Which path they choose is up to them. They are many religions that offer comfort, as well as non-mainstream spiritual paths such as Shamanism, Paganism, Gnosticism, yoga, and meditation. Ultimately, it’s our choice which path we follow.

Blessed journeys!
